Class of 2008

Having been inspired by Cosmic Disco's excellent round of 2008, we thought it'd be a good idea to offer our own take on the year that was. It's not going to be as thorough or as well as written as our Mancunian counterparts, but here's what got us going this year... Read On:

Track of the year: Richard Gateaux 'Shadows' (Fat Fuk Recordings)
This track is a thick slice of dark disco noir, dripping with the kind of gothic soundscapes that you'd normally escape from an Italian horror movie, circa 1976.

This track has freaked out dance floors all year long, making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and your skin crawl like a deranged vampire is looming out of the dark corners of the club, ready to bite as soon as the 909 kicks in.

Proper head-down stuff. Absolutely amazing work from the man Gateaux... Pick up your own copy here.

Compilation of the year: 'Originals Volume 1' Compiled by Moonboots and Balearic Mike (Claremont 56)

Never one to do things by the book, Paul 'Mudd' Murphy decided to go it alone and set up the fantastic Claremont 56 label, in order to avoid the strains of record label release schedules and to allow him to release timeless music that really means something.

Originals Volume 1, the label's first compilation, sees Mancunian legends (and proper Beardos) Moonboots and Balearic Mike set to work on their own collections to dig out some seriously rare and exclusive tracks.

This came out just as winter was setting in here in the UK, but with one listen, you're immediately transported to sun-drenched Formenteran beach bar, SEAT parked in the lane behind you, boat shoes kicked off into the sand, Wayfarers on hand, and not a care in the world. Just don't say the B******* word, ok?

Find of the year: Patrick Simmons 'So Wrong' 12" Dance Mix (Polydor)
I stumbled across this little number in a well known South London digger's paradise just in time for summer, and my oh my, what an impact it has had.

Patrick Simmons was the guitarist from the Doobie Brothers, and in this solo sojourn from 1983, he let rip with possibly one of the greatest yacht-rock records ever made.

Simultaneously utterly timeless and completely dated (well look at that picture: the mullet, the tache, the shell suit top!!!), this track pelts along at about 124 bpm, with rattling tops and jangling guitars before breaking into a chorus so defiantly up-lifting that it just demands to be joined in with.

Looks like just gave away my secret weapon...

Re-edit of the year: Mott the Hoople 'Bastard' AMO1 Rework
Ok, we know re-edit has become a dirty word over the past year, and some have been either wholly forgettable or completely pointless (and often both), but there have been a couple that have really stood out.

Rub n Tug turned a forgotten Village People song and turned it into a druggy, building, late-night stormer of a track that detonated dancer's bodies and minds with it's thudding bass and rousing vocals.

Loud E took the weirdest and must inaccessible North African / Eastern percussion loops and turned them into peak time anthems.

And A Mountain of One took this track by Mott The Hoople and turned it into one of the heaviest disco tracks of the year! Packed full of riffs from the rumbling bass to the belting guitars. Completely superb.

New band of the year: The Invisible
What an incredible year this has been for The Invisible... They've headlined shows all over the UK, supported the likes of Hot Chip and Foals, had their debut album produced by none other than Matthew Herbert, and have been voted Clash magazine's ones to watch for 2009.

Their music is proggy, rhythmic, hypnotic, and groove-laden in equal measures. Every note that's played seems to be oscillated through an infinite bank of echo, delay and fx. Leo's drum beats lay the foundations of a super-tight driving force, Tom's keys stab and layer atmospherically while his bass riffs roll around the whole sound, and Dave's guitar's warp your head so much you think you're listening to an electronic orchestra, not a three piece.

This is Krautrock for the club generation, and here's a little taster. Brilliant and compelling - go see them, now!

Gig of the year: Neil Young @ The Hop Farm Festival, Kent, July
There's no doubt about it, Neil Young is a proper legend in his own time. His career spans over 40 years, and in that time he's released some of the most seminal records of any genre.

This gig, one of only two UK dates this year, saw him play a two and half hour set of some of the most mind-bending psychedelic excursions, coupled with beautiful stripped-down folk, slide-guitar-fueled country, and total all-out electric wig outs that had jaws on the floor from start to finish. I'll keep looking for some footage of the solo, but in the mean time, here he is playing Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

Live music-wise, it did not get any better than this in 2008. Sensational.

Festival of the year: The Electric Elephant, Croatia, August
In it's Inaugural year, The Electric Elephant was undoubtedly the highlight of ours, and about 900 other people's summer.

Taking place in a beautiful fishing village in Croatia's North Dalmatian coast, the festival brought together the best of the UK's folk, down-tempo, disco, and house for three days and nights of partying on the beach, in the club, on the boats, and under the stars.

With sessions hosted by the likes of Low Life, Aficionado, Horse Meat Disco, and the Electric Chair, this was like our musical paradise, and top top things off we were lucky enough to play, once in the club on the Friday night, out on the beach bar on Saturday night, and for the warm down on Monday.

Artist of the year: Phoreski
Phoreski, Nezza, or Neil, to his mum, is certainly no stranger to the Cosmic Truth. We've DJ'd with him a few times this year, and booked him to play at not one but two of our own parties.

When he's not unearthing some of the must obscure records we've ever heard, or putting together mixes for the likes of Beats in Space and Cool in the Pool, he's making tracks for his own Barefist imprint, as well as releasing work on Top Shelf, Is It Balearic, and Eskimo.

As well as all that lot, and a couple of side projects under different names he may or may not be involved in, he's also probably one of the most exciting DJs around at the moment. Not onlyhas he just got back from a gig in Sao Paulo alongside Chatteau Flight, on NewYear, he's off to Rotterdam, sharing the bill with none other than Loud E and I-F!

So there you go. A potted history of the Cosmic Truth's class of 2008. Here's to more of the same next in '09...

Tropicana end of year finale!

Another bit of post-event reportage here, but better late than never...
Last Sunday, we sent off the year and saw in the Christmas season with an all day knees-up at East End sunday rave joint, Tropicana. And boy, was it BIG!

We've had a cracking time at Tropicana over the past few months (and many sore-headed Mondays) so we were delighted to be hosting the final Sunday session of the year down at the Horse and Groom in Shoreditch.

To be completely honest my memories of it are a little hazy, but I can just about remember the line-up, and I reckon this is about as good as it gets for free on a Sunday afternoon:

Phoreski, who'd just flown in from a gig in Sao Paulo with Chateau Flight, and celebrating his new release on Bare Fist.

Our long-time disco compadre, Ben Pistor of Disco Bloodbath.

Friend, fellow vinyl obsessive, good time Lowlife and Croatian whooping partner, Matthew Burgess.

International jet-setter / Newcastle ket-setter, and one-third of the Bad Passion project, Chris Stoker.

Charlie and Dave (Rik pulled a sicky - lightweight!) from those pesky airwave polluters, To The Bone.

And us too, of course... Phew. I think I'm still recovering.

Instrumental Works

Ok so once again we've been pretty quiet of late.

But that's not to say we've been sat on our arse doing nothing. The opposite in fact. Last Friday we hosted a very special event that brought one of the most exciting, groundbreaking bands together with one of the most revered disco producers and collectors in the game.

On Friday 19th December (I know, I know, it was a while ago now) we battoned down the hatches of the old Hoxton Library in Shoreditch, and made our way down to the basement studio space for the night.

The headline act, The Invisible, fresh from touring with the likes of Hot Chip and Foals, played an incredible set that grooved along with echo-laden riffs and rhythms, creating multi-layered soundscapes that wouldn't seem possible from a three piece. Can and Neu! eat your hearts out... These guys are on another level.

The Richard Sen took to the helm, providing a dose of his trademark psyche disco, that kept the party going into the night.

Unfortunately we weren't able to record any of the sets but you can buy the Invisible's album (produced by Matthew Herbert, and released on Accidental records) very soon, and new single London Girl will be available with a couple of extremely hot remixes!

You can also download a mix by Richard Sen, that he recently did for Cool In The Pool Radio. Riffs and licks aplenty.

Finally, if you want more info, our friends over at Cosmic Disco were kind enough to preview the event in full! Cheers lads!

Winter...

The Cosmic Winter eh? It's upon us... I'd love to say that a blizzard of snow had created a psychedelic field around our internet connection that meant that we weren't able to blog.

Unfortunately, that isn't the case. We just haven't got around to posting anything...

Don't hold it against us though, there are a few bits and pieces to report. Firstly, our Dickie is over in South America, speading the message over in Argentina, and then Brazil for New Year, then somewhere else hot and glamorous... Git.

So Dan and I (Basil) are looking after things here for the time being. Don't worry Dickie, all will be safe and well when you return. We'll have the kettle on for ya.

Last weekend, we were down at fancy light-up dancefloor joint, Cube, giving the good folk of Shoreditch an education in proper dance music! Tune of the night was a slice of classic Chicago house... Sometimes you just have to go back to the beginning!

Then on Sunday it was down to the Horse and Groom for another Tropicana session. This week, we were joined by our old summertime Sunday sparring partner, James Priestly, sporting a very fine beard (no pics). And just in case we were starting to miss Dicky too much, the friendly, bespectacled Geordie, Wandy.

Next up, we have the Bad Passion party on Saturday 6th December at Cosmo Bar, which promises to be absolutely blinding, followed by a brief trip to Newcastle for Bread and Circus on Friday 12th December. After that, it's back to London Instrumental Works on December 19th, and our Christmas all-day knees-up on Sunday 21st December...

More on that to follow. Stay tuned!

Fresh from appearing in panto in Dorking we hosted Room 3 of the Lowlife Halloween party at top underground South london (but don't hold that against it) venue Corsica Studios. Also on the bill were Chris Duckenfield, Bill Brewster, Frank, our friends Matthew and Jolyon, Michael Cook and others.

From what we remember it was a great night. Here are a couple of snaps.

This Friday..

Dan's romancing in Sweden, leaving Dickie and Baze to fly the flag at the birthday celebrations of one of the Moustache Mamas. See the flyer above. Think we are on at 1am-ish. As well as the Mamas themselves, Damo from Bloodbath is also representing - fresh from giving shout-outs on Diesel radio this week.

After that we will be heading to fellow disco deviant (and birthday boy) Danny "The Menace" Clarke's LateNightAudio/ElectricMinds party down the road at Visions. Him, Toby, Dolan, Nat, Charlie etc will be once again raising the low-ceiling til the wee hours.

Speaking of Danny "Coy" Clarke - some exciting news to announce regarding a new Sunday residency with him. More info to follow...

TSHDT? @ The Scoltster

They Shoot Horses Don't They is a monthly Thursday night 'gathering' hosted by those nice chaps Matty and Ben. It's held at the Scolts Head in De Beuvoir (or 'Islington border' as they say down Foxtons) - a terrific boozer that has to be seen to be believed.

The Cosmic Truth are taking a load of records down next Thurs (2nd Oct) and doing a 5-man B2B session. And here records means records - no CDs, just good ol' fashioned vinyl. Really looking forward to dusting off some bits that don't get played in public too often.

Sundaze Scenes

Y'man Kenny Campbell was clever enough to take along a boots disposable camera to the party last week.

Pics didn't turn out too bad.

Norman Whitfield RIP

Even though we didn't get around to it at the time, it would be wrong of us not pay our respects to the late, great Norman Whitfield, who very unfortunately died last week.

Whitfield was a hugely influential member of the Motown 'Hit Factory', penning such seminal tracks as Heard It Through The Grape Vine, War, and Papa Was A Rolling Stone, and producing artists such as Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations.

His story goes that he only ended up in Motor City because his parent's car broke down on the way home from a wedding in California, and so in Detroit he stayed. In 1961, Whitfield joined Berry Gordy's Motown lable as head of Quality Control, where he was tasked with the enviable job of listening to, and then grading forthcoming releases.

It was here that he must have honed his ear for a tune, and by 1964, he was writing and producing his own tracks, including Needle In A Haystack, by The Velvelettes.

By 1968, Whitfield's work, particularly with the Temptations had a noticable psychedelic influence, and Whitfield credited Sly Stone for showing him that production was the 'science of sound', a mantra that producers - be they funk, soul, disco, rock and roll, or electronica - have lived by ever since.

In the early 1970s, a trend for psychedelic soul had taken hold of black music, and once again, Whitfield pioneered the movement with his new project, The Undisputed Truth.

Amongst their eight album discography, was 1975's Cosmic Truth, a multi-layered, boundry-pushing LP of spaced out soul, drum tracks, acid folk, and soundscapes, including the hypnotic UFO, and a cover of Neil Young's Down By The River.

It was this LP, Cosmic Truth that made us realise that we did have our own take on what dance music meant, and inspired us to get off our arses and play the music we loved, whether people new it, or it had a 4/4 beat, or it was over 110 bpm or not.

You could say we were shown the Cosmic Truth...

And whilst the passing of Norman Whitfield is very, very sad, we have a huge amount to be thankful for. So instead, we'd like to celebrate his life... And to show what fun they were having in their hayday, here's a clip of the Undisputed Truth performing Boogie Bump Boogie, from 1976.

Norman Whitfield, born May 12 1941; died September 16 2008.

Where ever you are... Keep it Cosmic x

Secret Sundaze this weekend

This Sunday we're returning to host the back room at top London shindig Secret Sundaze.

In the main room hosts with the most Giles and James are joined by Rekids main man Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards - a producer at the top of his game and an amazing DJ to boot.

The party is the penultimate of the summer sundaze season, and is on at Ministry Of Sound from 2pm til 10pm.

Take Monday off work and get down! We might have some spare concs guestlist. Get in touch to find out....

Disco Mudbath

Wednesday afternoon... I'm still only about halfway recovered from our amazing weekend at Bestival. But it was seriously worth it!

We arrived on Friday night, halfway through the wetest 24 hours of the year so far. Good timing. having said that, the rain meant that a fair few punters decided to skip seeing My Bloody Valentine and Greg Wilson and come see us instead, since we had the luxury of a tent!
It was a great set, and even better to see so many friendly faces! Loads of fun... Thanks you lot!

After a crazy day on saturday, that ended up having a party in a portakabin with the Horse Meat boys and about 20 other people, we finally made it back to the tent. If only we'd stopped there...

At midday on Sunday we were back at the Havana Club, feeling extremely 'refreshed' after a long night's 'rest'. Disguises were extremely necessary.

But what a great day it turned out to be... By the time I dropped The Who 'Emminence Front' it was absolutely rocking!
Me having a 'moment'...

Is this what they call tearing up the dancefloor...?

Bestival Set Times

The Bestival weekend is shaping up to be a laugh, with any discerning music fan knowing that the Havana tent is the place to be.

The line up over the three days features lots of familiar faces from both past "Cosmic Truth" parties and from shindigs we've been invited to guest at. If i was a betting man I'd say there are some future "Cosmic Truth" guests kickin about too. Special thanks to Matty for the slots, and good work on the great looking line up.

The Cosmic Truth are doing three hours on the Friday night.

Unfortunately Dan's shooting off early on Sunday. However, Dickie and Baze will be saying Hi-Di-Hi campers and kicking off proceedings in the Havana tent with their 'Back Off: My Boyfriend Is A Sailor' set! (Apparently there is some kind of sea theme to the annual Bestival fancy dress code.)

Elephant Tracks

Ok, so here's the second part of our Croatian Elephant jaunt... This time, it's all about the music!

There were so many stand out moments of musical excellence over the weekend, but here's a quick attempt at narrowing it down to ten tracks. I might make a compilation tape out of this lot if I get chance. In the mean time, here's a few samples for you to listen to.

Here we go:

Sade 'Paradise' (Dreamtime remix)

First up, a dreamy start to the selection... You've got to love Sade anyway, but Mudd dropped the amazing Dreamtime remix of Paradise about half an hour before sunset on Sunday evening, just as the sky was turning warm pink, and we were all dancing bare-footed on the terrace, things couldn't have got much better.

Izzy Royal 'Corrie theme' (Ska Version)

From the utterly sublime to the mildly ridiculous, this little number summed up the fun we were having on bank holiday Monday. Most people were at home watching the Coronation Street omnibus. We were on a beach, listening to the Ska version. Eeeeaaazy now.

Karen Young 'Deetour'

If we ever release a Cosmic Truth compilation, this will certainly be on it. Deetour has been a massive tune for us since our very first party.

Moonboots played this in Barbarella's Discotheque just as things were getting going on Sunday night - If there was ever a tune to get a party started, this is it (This isn't the original, you'll have to find that for yourself, but it's still get the funk!).

Get dancing in your chair.

MIA 'Paper Planes' (DFA remix)

The first of many killer tunes from the Low Life boat party. This remix of MIA's Paper Planes seemed to bump along at the same tempo as the ship was bobbing along the Adriatic on our maiden voyage of 2008. Nice way to start the day!

Punkin' Machine 'I Need You Tonight'

A boat 'moment' for all aboard the good ship Low Life. Is that some CDJ trickery from DJ (Slip)Matt Burgess? Or a ghost in the machine? Spookily, when looking through collated video clips of the boat parties, it seems this track was when the filmmakers in attendence decided to get filming.

Same scenes...different angles

Escape From New York 'Fire In My Heart'

The final track of the Low Life boat brought on a singalong as we pulled in to the harbour and took time out from the seven seas til HMD vs HE.

EFNY were not exactly prolific producers in terms of quantity, managing only two singles in their blink-and-miss-it career. Like their contemporaries Punkin Machine (who knocked up a healthier four singles during their time in the fickle early-80s) it is definately a case of quality over quantity. If these acts had adopted a Madonna-like work ethic to churning out copious 'hits' then maybe these beuts would not have come about. Or, the other argument might be that we could potentially have a disco Beatles before us. Or maybe both acts had a massive case of beginners luck - who knows?? Am I rambling...

This clip (un)fortunately doesn't have the sing-along!

James Mason 'I Want Your Love''

No, not the Chic track.

In what was a Chair inspired event it was a surprise not to hear some of the more popular/classic/nostalgic/anthemic of the Una's clubnight and compilation tracks being played. [OK, we missed the Electric Chair Saved My Life boat!]. We did hear the closing track to the first Electric Soul album during the beach bar's impromptu Monday afternoon takeover. Beautiful low-slung sonic soul. And for some reason (!) it sounded better in the bazing sunshine with a flower vase of liquour than it did on my daily Central Line commute.

BTW - I don't know who played this, but if it was you please get in touch. The track before it was sublime on a similar future soul sound, but I was too horizontal to get up and ask what it was!

Tullio De Piscopo 'Stop Bajon'

This list is in no particular order, though it's fitting that we save this track for the end. Massive in the Cosmic Loft for years, perfect sunset tune, delivered by the man like Paul N Murphy, whooped along to by Baze!

Whoever said 'a picture tells a thousand words' wasn't lying...

No Photoshop trickery deployed here. This was the actual sky as seen from the beach bar.

Monday 1 September 2008

Cosmic Croatia!

Well well well... We return from the sunny climbs of the Electric Elephant in Croatia. Absolutely amazing scenez!

Mega thanks to Moggsy and all the organisers for putting on a brilliant party that had us all with our hands in the air and huge grins on our faces from Friday until Monday. Or was that just me... Erm... I'll post a link to the rest of the pics sometime, and also stick them on our facebook group site, but as you'll see, there was a lot of sunshine-fuelled, estactic joyful moments... All good clean fun, of course.

Too many excellent times to mention right now, but we'll add more in the week. However, it would be rude not to mention Mudd's amazing five hour beach bar set on Sunday- possibly the best selection of music we've ever layed ears on, Matt, Bill & Micheal's riotous Lowlife boat party, the Vauxhall - Mancunia face off of Horsemeat Vs Homo Electric, plus crazy escapades with the Dublin Downtown Sounds crew, Charlie and Rik To The Bone (nice tats, lads), ands all the other lovely people we met over the weekend. Not forgetting our gourgeous Cosmic Groupies either...

Disco love to you all x

Cosmic Wag brings up Dickie's rear...

Erm, too many cooks, lads, yeah?

Dan attempts to shuv Jim's head up James' bum...

"Bet you I can look more serious than you"

Facial hair: de rigur for the discerning disco holiday maker...

Gratuitous shots of bikini-clad women...

Happy days!

Mix archive

We should really have done a new mix before we headed off to Croatia, but haven't quite got around to it yet... Still a couple of days though, so you never know.

In the mean time, here's one from the archive. We did this one way back in Autumn 2007, exclusively for our friend The Chungmeister, aka Sir Dom of Chung esq, and his Chibuku show on Ministry radio.

We thought we'd take this one a bit more uptempo for the Ministry crowd, and even attempt to mix some of the tunes! Thankfully this edit spares you having to listen to us yap on at the beginning though.

There's a few absolute killers on there, and to be honest, a lot of the tracks are still in my record bag nearly a year later... Not sure if I should be proud of that though!

Have a listen and see what you think.

Downtime...

After a busy few weeks for the Cosmic Truth, we took a bit of time out this weekend to chill before we all head to Croatia for a certain festival which kicks off on Friday!

We've had some excellent gigs recently, whether they've been in bizarre warehouses in Hackney, or in proper, bona fide Superclubs! Hello to everyone we met down at Ministry - we had a brilliant time, and hope you did too... Think these pics are a bit dark to make anyone out, but you never know.

This weekend was a bit less hectic, but we still managed to spread the cosmic message at the excellent Bronze Club @ the Macbeth on Hoxton street. The night was headlined by the Golden Silvers, who we think are probably the best new band around at the moment.

If you don't know them, check out their Myspace.

Psychedelic, acid-fuelled fuzzy ska vibez!

BESTIVAL

We just found out we're playing Bestival this September...

Woo hoo!

We'll give you the full details of where and when as they're confirmed.

SCENEZ.

Friday 8 August 2008

Cosmic Contact from Berlin via New Cross!

The second in our mix tape series - that's two in two days if you hadn't been counting. Not sure if it'll carry on like this, but we'll see. There's certainly plenty more to come!

This one is called Cosmic Contact, which 'spotters will recognise as being the title of the spoken word intro, by none other than the kings and queens of psychedelic soul - and our indirect namesakes - the Undisputed Truth.

I picked up a few of these tracks when I was out in Berlin recently, trawling the flea markets on Sunday afternoon after spending the previous 12 hours making the most the cities amazing night (and morning) life.

There's also a few cheeky edits in there, plus some more recent bits from the likes of Richard Gatteaux, Brennan Green and the Dissident stable.

Download it here.

Enjoy!

Thursday 7 August 2008

August gigs

I'm going to work out a way to do this so we can have forthcoming gigs up all the time, but right now, here are our confirmed gigs for the rest of August:

Sunday August 10th: Secretsundaze @ Ministry of Sound, London

Friday August 15th: The Bronze Club @ The Macbeth, London (Nick only)

Friday August 22nd: Barbarella's Discotheque @ Electric Elephant festival, Croatia

Saturday August 23rd: Beach Bar Stage @ Electric Elephant festival, Croatia

More to follow as we get them confirmed... Hope to see you at one of those soon!

Mix tape series

So, the first in what I'm sure will be an irregular series of mix tapes...

The first one is called the Beach Bar Blend and it was inspired by our booking to play over in Croatia at the Electric Elephant festival. And if you haven't got yourself a ticket yet, then get on the case - not long now.

It's a pretty chilled, summery selection, with tracks from Cerrone, Crosby Stills & Nash, Grace Jones, Herb Alpert, The Rolling Stones, and lots of other Balearic favourites.

Download it here!

And as I looked closer, I realised that these were not walls, but shafts of light, bending in front of me...

...Twisting, turning, moulding to form shapes in front of my eyes.

The light took the form of a message, telling me to keep searching. Searching for the truth. The Cosmic Truth.

Hello and welcome to thecosmictruth.com. Thanks for visiting – we hope you like it...

P.S. Thanks to A Mountain of One for the psychedelic opening title!
