Hey there... It's been too long. Sorry.

Electric Minds Loft Party

After a busy summer festival hopping, it feels great to be gearing up for a good old late night disco party somewhere in east London. Especially so when the party is thrown by our friends at Electric Minds, who've been putting together some of the most exciting events in London over the last year or so.

Set in a spacious, airy loft space, overlooking the streets of Shoreditch, kitted out with a hefty Funktion One soundsystem, and packed to the rafters with happy, smiley people, these parties have provided us with some of the best nights out we've had for ages. Check out the gallery from the last party, with Mark E and Move D here.

From it's inception, the Electric Minds Loft Party series has been a breath of fresh air, and a massive injection of fun, into London'd clubbing landscape. With programming that has seen local party crews paired with international guests, rising stars next to established trend-shapers, and boundaries pushed by introducing alternative sounds from the likes of critically acclaimed Commix to what can sometimes feel like a somewhat samey scene. The line up this time is no less impressive, with Innervision's Marcus Worgull joined by the excellent Christopher Rau, plus Electric Minds label boss Dolan Bergin, and our good selves!

Just when we thought things couldn't get any better, the whole orchestra led a conga dance right through the crowd, to the tune of Sun Ra's psyche jazz epic 'Space is the Place'.

Young Dan Hill has consistently booked top talent for his night - recently we've been spotted on the floor there dancing to 6th Borough Project and who can forget the rammed session the week after NYE when Wevvers played a blinder in the basement.

Tonight I'm upstairs with Minkioni, Dave O (Mintvibe) and Jonathan Amplify, while electronic boogie maestro Linkwood and 'Raymond' Mang are downstairs with Danimal.

Erica Iris Simmons: Tape Art

Cast your mind back to the days before CDs could be burnt or mp3s could be ripped, when there existed a music format beautiful in its analogue simplicity. The humble cassette tape was (for a brief period) vinyl's cooler, sharper, more portable, recordable brother. In spite of implementing such radical features as Dolby NR and (gasp) auto-reverse, technology advanced and people became frustrated at the shit sound quality and time consuming means of accessing tracks - hence the format was rendered obsolete. (Though to its credit it enjoyed a more fruitful career than mini-disc).

Those old enough to remember using this format may too recall those instances when the cassette would jam in the player. The cartridge would spew out tape ribbon and that freshly recorded Bruno Brookes Top 40 Chart Countdown would be lost forever. Now to the point of all this rambling nostalgia...check out these super cool works of art created using old C90 tape. We can't be sure whether the artist was inspired by such a hardware malfunction (but we'd like to think there is some story behind these incredible works).

Like a lot of great pop art, when you break it down its a relatively simple idea. What makes it stand out is how striking the final result is. You'll find lots more here.

Late night audio returns for 2010 with its original line up for Bank Holiday Easter Sunday at the all new Drop Venue Stoke Newington.

Very limited capacity, a special martin audio floodlight sound system has been installed and lovingly tuned for clarity and audio purity. We will also be warming up the new sound system with a Rane 1620 rotary mixer to ensure depth and good vibrations.

Late night audio has been busy of late focussing on the recording side of the creative collective. Soon to be released is the Toby Tobias Macasu E.P. This features four amazing cuts on ltd edition quality vinyl soon to be in the shops imminently. To follow this will be the Das Volt E.P with an eagerly anticipated remix from none other than Mark E.

Late night audio has been focusing on influences by the less well known, but no less legendary tracks and Dj's from Disco, early Boogie, Balearia and leftfield electronic jams to stripped back modern workouts, that re-translate them into warm late night emotive sounds and speaker collages for 21st century.

This night is one not to be missed, true late night sounds.

So a few weeks ago I tried to get into Carwash at The Aquarium. It's an amazing disco night based in London's trendy Old Street district, a bit like New York's midtown.

They didn't like the look of me and said it was full so I told them about this blog and how I could get them some exposure. It didn't work and they seemed even more agitated after I brought it up.

I went back to the club last week and saw this sign...

As Dickie quite rightly pointed out, I'm currently traveling through the outback of northern Spain. Anytime I set foot on a bus, heading for my next destination, the hook from a very special record immediately starts looping itself around my head.

The track is 'Road Trip' by The Fifth Edition, aka none other than Luke Solomon and Justin Harris, from Music for Freaks, and Faith old boy, Diesel. Released on 20:20 Vision way back in 1996, when despite being only a nipper (sort of), I was regularly sneaking my way into the seminal Leeds club, Back To Basics. Looking back, this is one of the tracks that soundtracked the early days of my love for house music, getting regular play from Basics residents and guests, including Ralph Lawson, James Holroyd, Huggy, Derrick Carter, Miles Holloway & Elliot Eastwick, Pete Heller, Dino & Terry and the Inland Knights amongst many others. For anyone who's ever been to Back to Basics, I'm sure they'd agree that those memories will last forever.

Back in October of last year we threw a party with one of our favourite producers and DJs, the italo disco fiend that is Casionova.

As well being an ace party DJ, Casionova also hosts a weekly radio show on Intergalactic.FM, called Magic Waves. After four years of broadcasting, the most recent show featured the top 100 most played records since Magic Waves began. And there have been some killers!

Randomly found this footage of an old Naked & The Boys performance from a couple of years ago.

And right at the end there's a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo appearance from Ricky & Nicky.

Shame NATB are no longer operating, but Jack is busy building a new studio and has a new band and some tricks up his wizard's sleeve. Let's reminisce with a rewind on one of their best tracks - 'If You Find Love'. Admittedly not cosmic, but nice and jangly.

Released at the height of their popularity, when they'd signed to Young And Lost, Jack and Tommy had the world at their feet. Shame about that crack and hooker problem JB picked up as a result! And he used to be such a pretty boy as well.

Speaking of blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, look out for friend and one time Cosmic Truth door-whore Paul Woodson featuring.

Mrs Berkley, if you're reading this (which I admit is highly unlikely) I'm only jossing above about Jack's vices. Though he IS a pretty boy. I might post that Japanese chocolate bar advert he did and (kept very quiet about) if I can find it!

Just opposite The Lock Tavern is the famous Roundhouse venue where on Wednesday night I witnessed my talented Turbo flatmate Georgie Commix win the RBMA four way Soundclash with his Metalheadz cohorts. Up against the formidable talents of Soul II Soul, Trojan Soundsystem and DMZ, it was certainly no mean feat! Brrrrap!

Had a weekend of beard stroking thanks to Red Bull Music Academy, who are using London as this year's base to "explore music beyond the beat".

Friday I was at Royal Festival Hall for the Resident Advisor RBMA electronic pioneers showcase ft. Carl Craig et al.

Then Saturday it was I.C.A for Jazzy B, giving a talk about his musical path set against the backdrop of London's various scenes and subcultures, followed by an Ableton workshop hosted by friend of The Cosmic Truth, Toby Tobias.

Afterwards I was given an advance listen to Toby's forthcoming release on LateNightAudio and can honestly say its the best track I've heard in 2010 so far. Will post more about the track closer to the release, but for now here's the Motor City Drum Ensemble remix, which features as part of the package:

Andy 'Ticker' Whittaker is the good honest Yorkshireman behind the legendary 20:20 Vision label (along with Basics resident Ralph Lawson), and the mysterious Redux imprint - signing the likes of Greg Wilson, Toby Tobias and Pete Herbert.

In addition to playing over the globe, he is resident at Asylum (Leeds), where they’ve played host to everyone from Metro Area to Horse Meat Disco.

Dave O, meanwhile, is a bit more of a mysterious character. One of the original resident’s at All Nations House, a basement club in deepest darkest Hackney, where back in the day they’d be busting out reggae with bass so low it’d shake all the way to Clapton. What a time we've all had there. Great food, amazing music, and memories to treasure forever. We've had guest appearances by many past Cosmic Truth guests (Moonboots, Balearic Mike, Danni Crazy P), and many of the wider disco fraternity (Eric Duncan and Lee Douglass to name a couple).

It's been a magical few years having that as a base - and quite fitting that we recently found out an interesting fact concerning the history of the building. No, its not built on the site of an ancient Indian burial ground (that we know of). Lowlife had their first UK party in the premises! We'll let Bill and Frank explain...

Hot Blood

Tonight, Lovebox and Electric Minds join forces to pay tribute to one of the true legends of modern music, Arthur Russell. A man who made his mark in downtown NYC in the mid 80s with pioneering music that was often as eerily avante garde as it was vibrant and energetic. He produced some of the most seminal dance records of all time, such as Dinosaur L's Go Bang, and Loose Joint's All Over My Face, as well as pushing sonic boundaries, and exercising his love for the ciello with a series of experimental, but still utterly beautiful pieces of music.

The mark he made has inspired many, and his contemparies still cite his influence to this day. One such contemporary is author and academic Tim Lawrence, who will introduce Wild Combination - a documentary about Arthur Russell - tonight at the Hot Blood event.

Following that, the event will showcase tracks from the excellent Go Bang Arthur Russell tribute compilation, with live performances from Killer Whale and My Tiger My Timing, as well as DJ sets from Maurice Fulton, Faze Action, Yam Who?, and many more, including ourselves.

Later in the night/morning we ended up at the HQ of Diesel Radio hanging with Franz Ferdinand and Craig Charles off the telly (and crack pipe) fame.

Gino is no dodgy dealer, he is the driver, wide lapels, Carrera Aviators surely stuck in his black raven toupee and Lucky Striker dangling from his lips, Sartre meets less than Zero, the Visionary is the awesome sound of his head trip as he speeds down treacherous coastal roads towards a palace of white marble where all the beautiful people spin to trashy and blissful sounds under the silver moon.

Just seen this video for the first time ever, after reading a short interview with Daniel Wang on records he'd love to play, but never gets the chance. Well Danny should get himself over to the Cosmic Loft. I went through a period of playing this tune nearly every Saturday morning for about four months. In fact it featured on one of our mixes, which I'll have to dig out and re-post.

Any way, if you partied a bit too hard this weekend, just take five minutes out of your life to watch this video and listen to Herb's funky composition. I promise you'll feel pretty good afterwards.

Here's last week's show for streaming. Its a Bestival special - hurray! In reality, this equates to the opening track being Kraftwerk (in homage to their distinctly average outing on the main stage on Sat night), and a play for the track 'James Rowntree' gave us when we DJ'd after him - a rather nice edit/mix of Michael Jackson. Given that the track in question is one of my favourite records of all time, its a miracle that upon being presented with it, the CDR wasn't immediately used as a frisbee. It's actually a quirky, infectious take on the original. Ah, also included, there's a version of the Faze track which we opened proceedings with.

Also on the show, we debut our remix of Skinny Lister, a band who are signed to Sunday Best, the label who oversee the Bestival event.

Reports are starting to come in about the wonderful Electric Elephant festival, which took place last week, August 28th, 29th, and 30th, in Petracane, Croatia. Whilst budget flight loads of London (and beyond's) disco fraternity easyjetted their way to the Adriatic, the Cosmic Truth split ranks with Richie heading for the Sun, and Nicky holding the fort at home, and manning the decks at Secret Sundaze.

Richie should be back immently, so expect full reports soon, but the stories of blissful sunsets, boat parties on crystal seas, and beach bar sessions that go on into the night, I thought I'd post some Friday sunshine music.

Bank holiday raving

Secretsundaze this weekend... After the massive bank holiday opening party we played at in May, we are very excited!

We're doing the upstairs space with the Late Night Audio boys, Danny Clark and Toby Tobias.

Downstairs, the line up is about as good as house gets, with James & Giles, Steve Bug from Poker Flat, Canadians Guillaume and the Coutudumonts playing live, and the house legend that is Doc Martin playing an exclusive London gig.

The setting is THAT club, secluded somewhere in the Greenwich peninsula, which means there's no need to worry about keeping the sound up nice and loud on the huge terrace, all day and night!

Summer time

Whilst Dickie's been off spreading the Cosmic message to our oriental bredren in China and Hong Kong, jet setting disco crustacean that he is, I've been making the most of summer in Blighty.

As well as another excellent session with Greg Wilson and the Hellfire Club boys, there was impromptu set at Lovebox with Danny from Late Night Audio, standing in for Toby Tobias, who fancied a lie-in.

Last weekend, it was up to Cambridge for the extremely mental Secret Garden Party. We had a bit of a Chocolate Vanilla / Cosmic Truth collaboration happening on the Where The Wild Things Are stage, as we kept the system warm between the bands.

There were some great performances over the weekend, including the ever excellent Invisible, celebrating their recent Mercury Music Award nomination (congratulations lads!), and Cosmic favourites, the Golden Silvers.

Another highlight were Canadian three-piece Caribou, who I saw for the first time on Saturday night, and was completely blown away. Pounding rhythmic drums, coupled with layered Beach Boys-style harmonies. This band come very highly recommended! Check them out...

The rest of the weekend was spent wandering the site, checking out the various sporadic happenings that make the Secret Garden Party such a crazy place. From Lancashire hippies passing around peace pipes, to late-night swing speakeasies, to gypsy bands hanging from tree tops... It's not your average weekend.

Today, half of the East End seem to be heading to Field Day. Amongst the many excellent parties this evening, the Electric Minds 4th birthday party gets our seal of approval, especially since label boss Dolan Bergin will be joining us at our next Cosmic Truth session on Saturday 8th August.

Who's afraid of August 8th?

Having bigged up the amazing Invisible College track in a previous post, we’re very excited to announce that for our next party, we will be joined by the master mind behind this epic piece of music, Ben Williams a.k.a Gatto Fritto.

Since we heard whispers that the track was getting a re-released on Ben’s own Fritto Morto label, we’ve been itching to get him down to one of our parties. The perfect blend of jangling guitars, fuzzy keys, and warm, analogue bass, this track pretty much defines everything we’re about musically. If you don’t know it, check it out on the myspace music player.

But Gatto Fritto are by no means a one hit wonder. Having released a string of excellent tracks on Dissident, including Cosmic Truth favourites such as the rolling funk of Clem’s Bounce and bleepy Hungry Ghosts, plus a host of other tracks either out now or lined up for release on his own label, it seems that the vaults at Fritto Towers must be bursting with incredible music, waiting to be set free.

The party will take place at an as yet un-named location, although it shouldn’t take too many clues to work out where for those in the know. All you need to know is that it’s a nice, intimate space, with good sound, reasonable bar, smoking terrace, and best of all, it’s free to get it in too.

The Bank Robbery

No, not a recount of how we spend our nights when we're not DJing, but an utterly incredible piece of music by the one and only John Carpenter from the seminal Escape From New York soundtrack from 1981.

I recently picked up the dark and druggy edit of The Bank Robbery, by Lory D on Italian (I think) lable Subdance. And with the bass of this track still throbbing in my head, I dug out the original soundtrack, and what a blinder it is.

The Return of Invisible College

Possibly the greatest dance record of 2007, in our eyes one of the tracks that truly defined the ressurgance of the spacey / cosmic / beardo / whatever disco sound.

Coming of like the sound of a John of Rupescissa playing guitar, walking the corridoors of a secluded monestry outposted on the hills of Formentara, Invisible College builds and builds with gothic and uplifiting sounds pieced together to form an epic piece of music to completely loose your mind to. Each instrument is added one by one, be they analogue synths, vintage fx, and rattling drums, held together by a fuzzy, warm resonance, as if the whole thing is bouncing off the stone walls of chapel as you face the alter. The whole thing builds into a rich cacophony of layer upon layer of sound until about eight minutes in the whole thing drops back to just the lush jangling of the guitar for the breakdown.

The track was originally put out as a single sided, super limited release on the much-lorded Dissident imprint, and was immediately snapped up by anyone with more than a drop of taste. But as is the Dissident mantra, the label doesn't own the music, the artists do, and after almost three years of waiting, Gatto Fritto have re-released the track on their own Fritto Morto label.

If you pay for only one track throughout July, then make it Invisible College. An absolutely timeless recording that we personally could not live without.

We've had a namecheck in the latest issue of DJ Mag. The article is all about the thriving disco scene in London Town, focusing on the Tropicana night ran by our dear friends Danny 'The Menace' Clarke and Neil 'Ravemaster General' Thornton. Fact fans will know the night from the weekly Sunday sessions held at the (then newly re-vamped) Horse & Groom last year, where we held a little residency. This year they have been concentrating on their 'Escape From New York' roof parties at The Queen Of Hoxton just down the road, and have showcased some great international talent including DFA darlings Holy Ghost and Chinatown's Brennan Green.

We couldn't do a post about DJ Mag without some gratuitous shots of flesh. In the name of decency, and so as not not detract from the gravely serious issue of disco diatribe, we won't upload any shots to the blog- but for those who are interested click >here< for the chance of seeing The Cosmic Truth in their speedos. Maybe.

The venue for the party this weekend will be the top floor of 70 Hoxton Street, London N1 6LP.

It's a really nice intimate loft space, but make sure you arrive nice and early to ensure you get in before we reach capacity. It kicks off at 9pm so you have plenty of time.

It's another free party, but you'll need the password - just say THRODDY at the door, and head striaght up to stairs.
